Martina Franca is one of the most important city of the Valle d’Itria (the area with the trulli: a unique kind of building with stone conical roof without any mortar).
We will visit the city center of this lively city with its typical baroque style palaces and churches, the sumptuous Ducal Palace with its rooms adorned with frescoes and its folks traditions museum. We will discover the legend of St. Martin’s cloak and the beggar.
During the tour we will enjoy also the visit of one of the most traditional and renowned butcher’s shop where we will discover and taste the excellence of Apulian courgetterie (the Capocollo di Martina, a Slow Food Presidia pork cured meat similar to a smoked ham and other salami), taralli (salty typical snacks) and wine.
We will admire the skyline of Locorotondo (its name comes from the circular lay out of its city center) and we will visit this picturesque hamlet famous for its wine and its whitewashed houses with “pignon” stone roof . It has been awarded with the Orange Flag (a recognition for the quality of tourism and the environment in small inland towns) by the Italian Touring Club.
At the end of the tour we will visit a winery with a 17th century masseria (typical farmhouse) to taste some white wines (made with Bianco D’Alessando, Verdeca and Minutolo grapes), rosè and red wines (made with Primitivo and Susumaniello grapes).
Some idea for changes to the itinerary
It’s also possible to extend / modify the tour with a lunch / dinner in a typical restaurant (Martina Franca is famous for its sausages and bombette), a cooking lesson, a winery, a cheese or some other typical product producer, a visit to Alberobello and/or Cisternino and /or Ceglie Messapica (the temple of Apulian cuisine with deliciuos cheese, Biscotto di Ceglie Slow Food presidia).
